Michael Smith

Managing Director

Michael, the founder and Managing Director of Norwood Advisors, has nearly thirty years of experience as an executive or advisor to small and mid-sized companies across a broad span of industries. He has served both publicly-traded and privately-held companies with sales ranging from $5.0 million to $300.0 million.
Prior to forming Norwood Advisors, Michael was COO/CFO for two emerging companies upon their transition to private equity ownership. At Marbles: The Brain Store he established systems, controls and key metrics to guide the growth of the chain from twenty-nine to more than forty stores. Michael also guided management in a successful launch of a domestic and international wholesale business that created tremendous shareholder value. At Revolution Dancewear, he managed a leveraged recapitalization of the company, revamped the inventory management and reporting systems to provide statistical support for purchasing decisions and managed the implementation of a new ERP system.
Previously, Michael was CFO of Cobra Electronics Corporation, a publicly-traded designer and distributor of consumer electronics. While with Cobra, he managed the company’s successful compliance with Sarbanes Oxley, including the selection and implementation of new financial and reporting systems. Michael also guided the company’s acquisition of a UK-based consumer electronics company.
Michael previously had a successful career in turnaround consulting where he assisted clients such as The Children’s Place, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Foodarama Supermarkets and TSR (Dungeons & Dragons). While with a regional investment banking firm, Michael provided both buy-side and sell-side services to clients such as Wells Gardner, Lester B. Knight and H2O Plus. He began his career with A.T. Kearney.
Michael graduated from University of Miami with a BA in Economics, attended the University of Maryland’s PhD program in Economics and received an MBA in Finance from George Washington University.
Michael is an active participant in civic and community affairs, having previously served on the Board of Education for the high school district in which he resides and as a Board member and officer of several affiliates of the Jewish United Fund. He currently serves as a Trustee and Treasurer of The Benton Foundation.
